LIMOGES, FRANCE, Oct 18 — The historic 143-year-old town hall (Hôtel de Ville) of Limoges in central France has collapsed after being set ablaze by masked rioters during violent nationwide cost-of-living protests.

The landmark structure, originally constructed in 1883, was heavily engulfed by intense nighttime flames on October 17 before its clock tower spire and upper roof collapsed into the main hall. Municipal officials confirmed the building has been largely destroyed.

Video footage capturing the incident shows massive flames consuming the historic façade before the central tower structure crumbled amid thick plumes of smoke.

Nationwide unrest over living costs

The arson incident in Limoges comes amid escalating civil unrest across France, where over 500,000 demonstrators took to the streets to protest rising inflation and soaring living costs.

While many demonstrations across major cities began peacefully, violent clashes erupted in several regional hubs as masked agitators broke off from main protest marches, clashing with law enforcement and targeting public institutions.

French authorities reported multiple arrests and damage to administrative infrastructure across several regions. Government spokespersons drew a clear line between peaceful citizens exercising their right to demonstrate and violent rioters engaging in criminal destruction.

Severe loss of heritage

Local authorities and heritage officials expressed dismay over the destruction of the 19th-century architectural monument, which served as both the administrative center of Limoges and a prominent historical landmark.

Emergency services deployed dozens of firefighters to contain the inferno and prevent the flames from spreading to surrounding historical buildings in the town center.

Security forces have launched an investigation into the arson attack, reviewing surveillance footage and social media media captures to identify those responsible.
