Violent Clashes Erupt Along Yogyakarta’s Malioboro Street as Protesters Confront Riot Police Line

YOGYAKARTA — Tensions boiled over in central Yogyakarta on the night of October 28, 2026, as heavy clashes broke out between crowds of demonstrators and anti-riot police forces along the iconic Malioboro Street shopping and tourist district.

Video footage uploaded from the scene shows large groups of youth and demonstrators retreating along the boulevard while throwing objects toward a dense line of riot police officers equipped with helmets, protective body armor, and full-length clear shields.

Riot units formed tight defensive lines across the street near major retail storefronts and landmark hotels, holding off advancing crowds while projectiles rained down on police positions.

Escalation along Commercial Strip

Screams, shouting, and heavy police whistles echoed throughout the precinct as officers attempted to push back the crowd. Several protesters, some wearing face coverings and black hoodies, were seen hurling debris and stones at the barricades before retreating into side alleys.

Tear gas canisters and warning smoke cleared portions of the pedestrian walkways, causing bystanders and street vendors to flee the area as shopfronts shuttered their doors.

Local authorities have deployed additional security personnel to stabilize the Malioboro commercial perimeter, clear street debris, and maintain checkpoints across major intersections entering central Yogyakarta.
