KATHMANDU — Continuous heavy rainfall has triggered a massive landslide in Nepal’s northern Mustang district, causing a significant portion of a mountain to collapse directly into a river.
Footage captured at the scene shows large sections of rock and soil sliding down the steep slope, plunging into the river below and sending vast plumes of dust and water into the air.
Rising river levels and flood warnings
Local disaster management authorities have warned residents living downstream to remain vigilant as rising river levels heighten the risk of flash flooding across the region.
Monsoon rains across the Himalayan nation have repeatedly caused deadly landslides and localized flooding in recent weeks, damaging infrastructure and disrupting transportation routes along mountain passes. Emergency teams continue to monitor water levels as weather services predict further rainfall in affected districts.
