RUTENG, INDONESIA — A moderate magnitude 5.0 earthquake struck off the northern coast of Flores Island early Sunday morning, according to automated seismic recording networks.

The quake occurred at 3:37 AM local time (WITA) on September 27, 2026, with the epicenter located approximately 52 kilometers (32 miles) north-northwest of Ruteng, the capital of Manggarai Regency in East Nusa Tenggara province.

Shallow depth recorded in Flores Sea

Seismological data from the United States Geological Survey (USGS) and local monitoring stations confirmed the earthquake originated at a shallow depth of 10 kilometers beneath the seabed in the Flores Sea.

Due to the shallow depth and offshore location, light tremors were reported in coastal districts, including Reok and neighboring areas near Labuan Bajo. However, no immediate damage to structures or casualties were reported following the early morning shaking.

No tsunami hazard reported

Indonesia’s Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysical Agency (BMKG) did not issue a tsunami advisory for the surrounding coastal communities in East Nusa Tenggara or South Sulawesi.

The region north of Flores lies along active fault structures, making it prone to shallow seismic activity. Authorities advise residents to remain calm, avoid unverified rumors on social media, and report any felt tremors or minor structural damage to local disaster management offices.
